Steven Harper,a native of Jackson, Ms, started his band career at Hardy Middle School under the direction of Mrs. Jennifer Lloyd. It was during this time Steven discovered the power of learning music together. The basics of percussion music and all around band music became a passion immediately. After 2 years at Hardy, Steven went on to be a part of the Pride of Provine Band of Provine High School in Jackson. Under the direction of the “legendary” Tony Winters, Steven’s skills blossomed.

After graduating High School in 1995, Steven embraced the opportunity to be a part of the Alcorn State University family. The one and only Samuel Griffin was the Head Band director during Steven’s time at Alcorn and it would spark a drive that continues today. Steven also played timpani for the Wind ensemble and piano for the jazz bands. Steven was also a student arranger for the marching band.

After graduating with a Bachelors degree, Steven went back to Jackson to serve as a Minister of music For several churches in the area. But in 2012, Steven was presented with an opportunity by Dr. Renaldo Murray that would be considered a dream job. Steven became a staff member of Alcorn State University Marching Band. For the last 8 years with the partnering with Brian Sterling, the percussion section has shown nothing but growth. As a former member of the band , Steven is certainly proud to be a part of the new era of Alcorn State Band/Music program under the direction of Dr. Everson Martin and Mr. Melton Harvey.
