Join the Band

All high school and transfer students across the country are invited to audition for The Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite. The Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Marching Band is the largest student organization on campus, and includes students with an assorted range of interests and backgrounds, enrolled in various programs of study at the university, in pursuit of a degree and graduation. 

 

As a student in the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Band, you will have the opportunity to gain scholarships, travel to many locations around the country, become a part of a prosperous university and band tradition, and regularly perform for audiences across the nation as a representative of the university. Within the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite, you will form special bonds and relationships with the staff and fellow band mates that will last a lifetime.

   Fill out the S.O.D. Interest Form 

This form tells us some basic information about you, including your contact information, parent/guardian name, numbers, etc., which will help us keep you updated on important dates and information.

Apply to the university

Incoming freshmen and transfer students should apply for admission to the university using the application on the Alcorn State University's Admissions page. If help is needed with financial aid, you can visit Alcorn State University's Financial Aid page. Lastly, you can find about housing by clicking here for Alcorn State University's Residential Life

Audition

***UPDATED DECEMBER 2021***

Each prospective student of the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite can audition in person, complete a virtual audition by way of video submission, or by scheduling a live video conference with one of the band staff members. If you are a current high school Band Director, appointments can be set with the band staff to make an in person appearance to audition students. Auditions are held February 1st through April 30th. We encourage you schedule a live video conference in order for the staff to get to know you, however, we will accept recorded audition videos. We ask that you send all video recordings to soundsofdynomite@gmail.com through google drive. To schedule a live video audition, please email soundsofdynomite@gmail.comPlease remember to do your best when auditioning. This is how the staff determines your scholarship amount. Please see below for more detail.

 

 

Wind Instrument Players

Audition materials should include:

​

  • 12 major & minor scales (play as many octaves as possible)

  • Chromatic scale

  • Prepared piece of your choice

  • Sight reading (live video auditions)

Percussionists

Audition materials should include:

 

  •  original 40 rudiments (open,closed,open)

  •  a prepared written snare solo piece. 

  •  creative display on desired instrument

        ***Cymbal players***

In addition to the aforementioned snare requirements, include marching video footage (No twirling/blazing)

Golden Girls

Young ladies aspiring to audition for the World Renowned Golden Girls are required to also fill out the Golden Girls Interest Form. Once a date and time is determined by the band staff, a one-day CLOSED try out will take place in the Samuel S. Griffin Band Hall. All material needed for the audition can be received by emailing Dr. Kecia Ashley at kashley@soundsofdynomite.com. In addition to the fall semester, the World Renowned Golden Girls are also active in the spring in parades, basketball games, competitions, and special appearances.

Purple Flashers

Young ladies aspiring to audition for the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite's Purple Flashers are required to also fill out the S.O.D. Interest Form. Once a date and time is determined by the band staff, a one-day CLOSED try out will take place in the Samuel S. Griffin Band Hall. All material needed for the audition can be received by emailing
